Booking is recommended, weekends and
holidays are best avoided, and packages
are available from the southern resorts.
Candikuning's daily market , Bukit
Mungsu, offers a vast range of fruit,
spices and plants, including orchids.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE
By bus Candikuning is on the bus route between Denpasar
(Ubung; 1hr 30min) and Singaraja (Sukasada; 1hr 30min).
By shuttle bus Perama services drop you at the Sari
Artha losmen ( T 0368 21011), just below Bukit Mungsu
market on the main road in Candikuning. There's one daily
service to the north of the island and one to the south.
Destinations Kuta (2hr 30min-3hr); Lovina (1hr 30min);
Sanur (2hr-2hr 30min); Ubud (1hr 30min).

SINGARAJA AND AROUND
he second-largest Balinese city after
Denpasar, SINGARAJA has an airy
spaciousness created by broad avenues,
large monuments and colonial bungalows
set in attractive gardens. It's of most interest
to travellers for its transport connections: if
you're visiting the north you'll probably
pass through at some point.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE
By bemo and bus There are three bemo and bus
terminals in Singaraja.
Destinations Sukasada (locally called Sangket), to the
south of the town, serves Bedugul (1hr 30min) and
Denpasar (Ubung terminal; 3hr); Banyuasri, on the
western edge of town, serves the west, including Lovina
(20min), Seririt (40min) and Gilimanuk (2hr 30min); and
Penarukan is for services eastwards along the north
coast via Tulamben (1hr) to Amlapura (3hr), Culik (2hr
30min), Denpasar (Batubulan terminal; 3hr), Gianyar (2hr
20min), Penelokan (1hr 30min), Kubutambahan (20min)
and Tirtagangga (2hr 30min). Small bemos (around
Rp5000) ferry passengers between the terminals.
By long-distance bus All these buses leave from the
o ces listed; departure times are notoriously prone to
change so check before you set off. Menggala, Jl Jen
Achmad Yani 76 ( T 0362 24374), operates daily night
buses to Surabaya (7pm; 8hr), arriving at Probolinggo and
Pasuruan in East Java, access point for the Bromo region,
in the middle of the night. Safari Dharma Raya, Jl Jen
Achmad Yani 84 ( T 0362 23460), runs daily buses to
Jakarta (3pm; 24hr). Puspa Rama, Jl Jen Achmad Yani 90
( T 0362 22696), operates daily buses to Surabaya
(7.30pm; 8hr) and Malang (7.30pm; 9-10hr). They also
sell tickets for the daily bus that leaves Gilimanuk at 5pm
for Yogyakarta (12hr).

ACCOMMODATION

standards here, set on a grassy hillside overlooking the

EATING
Anda Just across the road from the turning to the
Botanical Gardens. This is one of the few places open in
the evenings. There's tasty Indonesian and Chinese food
from Rp20,000. Daily 8am-10pm.
Roti Bedugul On the main road near Bukit Mungsu
market. This café-bakery makes fabulous home-baked
bread, sweet buns and cookies, all for around Rp5000.
Daily 8am-4pm.
Strawberry Stop 2km north of Candikuning. Attached
to a strawberry farm and with a menu devoted to the
red fruit. Try the strawberries with cream, ice cream, milk-
shakes or pancakes (all around Rp10,000-20,000). Daily
8am-4/5pm.
