food meals, and (less healthily) bread, cakes and pastries.
There's a useful noticeboard downstairs and a bakery/store

.com; map p.259. Clear offers an excellent range of organic
raw, vegan, vegetarian and seafood dishes, drawing
culinary inspiration from across the globe. The decor is
eye-catching, and with mains from around Rp50,000 it
won't break the bank. Daily 8.30am-10pm.
very good-value wood-fired thin-crusts (Rp25,000-55,000),
washed down with cold Bintangs (from Rp19,000). Daily

Warung Lokal Jl Gootama; map p.259. One of the best
budget warungs in Ubud, with tasty nasi and mie goreng
for Rp12,000 and most other dishes below Rp20,000.

Made's Warung Penestanan ridge; map p.261. Homely
spot serving well-priced travellers' favourites (from
Rp25,000), including inexpensive juices, good nasi campur
and (with 24hr notice) Balinese smoked duck (Rp195,000
for two people). Daily 8am-10pm.
Murni's Warung Jl Raya Campuhan W murnis.com; map
p.261. Well-established, multi-tiered restaurant built
into the Wos River valley and serving curries, home-made
soups and Indonesian specialities (mains from Rp30,000),
as well as strawberry cheesecake. Daily 8am-10pm.
Naughty Nuri's Jl Raya Sanggingan T 0361 847 6722,
W naughtynurisbali.com; map p.261. Very popular grill-
house serving sublime ribs (Rp105,000) and martinis (the
latter highly rated by travelling gastronome Anthony
Bourdain) in an understated shack with long communal
tables. Daily 11am-10.30pm.
Ibu Oka Just off Jl Suweta; map p.259. This open-sided
warung attracts queues of diners for its babi guling (roast
suckling pig), which is cooked fresh every day (Rp44,000
with rice and sambal ). There are a couple of other branches
around town too. Daily 11am-5.30pm (or until the babi
guling runs out).

This chilled-out café has a huge range of home-made (and
generally organic) juices, lassis and smoothies (around
Rp20,000-35,000), soups, bagels, salads, crepes, sand-
wiches and cakes. Daily 8am-10pm.

.com; map p.259. Serving good-value travellers' food
(mains from Rp40,000) since 1979, including top soups,
salads, pastas and Indonesian dishes - the “Balinese
tapas” options are ideal for groups. Service can't be faulted
either. Daily 9am-midnight.

rice fields, this chilled-out café grows its own organic
produce and serves great veggie kebabs, delicious chicken

bali.com; map p.261. Smashing little spot, popular with
expats and tourists alike, serving excellent Mexican food
in hearty portions (around Rp45,000-80,000). Daily
11am-10pm.
Warung Nasi Pak Sedan Jl Raya Pengosekan; map
p.261. Some of the most economical food (dishes around
Rp10,000) in and around Ubud is served at the low-key
Warung Nasi Pak Sedan: try the tasty house speciality,
nasi campur ayam . Daily 7.30am-5pm.
Seniman Coffee Studio Jl Sriwedari T 0361 972085,
W senimancoffee.com; map p.259. Coffee (Rp21,000-
28,000) is elevated to an art form at this hip café/roastery/
design shop, which has a range of equipment that would
look more in place in a science lab. The menu features five
regular, single-origin coffees, plus weekly “guest beans”.
A range of courses is also on offer. Daily 8am-7pm.

authentic pizzeria in Ubud, Umah serves up large, tasty and

produce, with five- and seven-course
tasting menus that change every month,
as well as a select à la carte menu (mains

sous-vide, textures such as foams and
unusual ingredients all feature. Pricey for
Bali, but not with comparable restaurants
further afield. Mon-Sat 5-11pm.
DRINKING AND NIGHTLIFE
The bar scene can be very quiet, so choose a live-music
night to ensure a decent crowd. Most places outside offer
a free pick-up service if you phone ahead.
CENTRAL UBUD

shake its booty during live Latin music and salsa class
sessions. At other times this great spot just dishes up tasty
Cuban and Caribbean dishes and an array of cocktails
