and Sabine run this idyllic surf-focused
getaway in Canggu, just away from the
noise and hubbub of the main resorts.
Each individual cottage is charmingly
kitted out, either with outdoor terraces or
bales (open-air structures) on the roof.
The Chillhouse is just ten minutes from the
beach; yoga and trips to various places
on Bali are available daily, and the surf
instruction's considered to be the best in

LEGIAN AND SEMINYAK
Café Bali Jl Oberoi T 0361 736484. French-colonial-
style building serving inventive dishes (Rp39,000-108,000)
and catering to the chic expats of Bali - the strawberry
margharitas and tuna tartare are to die for. Book ahead in
the evenings. Daily 7.30am-11.30pm.
Earth Café Jl Oberoi T 0361 736645. This vegetarian-,
vegan-, gluten-intolerant- and raw-foodie-friendly café/
shop serves up restorative dishes such as quinoa pancakes,
chickpea burgers, and fruit and granola, as well as an array
of drinks. Perfect if you've over-indulged. Daily 7am-11pm.
Café Marzano Jl Double Six. Open-fronted café serving
authentic and reasonably priced Italian fare, with excellent
wood-oven pizzas (Rp46,000-85,000) panini and salads.

mexicolabali.com. A colourful blast of Mexicana, this
appealing taqueria-bar is full of memorabilia - from
Day of the Dead icons to World Cup photos. The menu runs
from tacos (Rp35,000) to ceviche; great drinks too.

Ryoshi Jl Seminyak 17 T 0361 731152. As well as serving
the best Japanese food (mains Rp49,000-96,000) in Bali,
Ryoshi also hosts a massively popular jazz night on Friday

Tekor Jl Double Six T 0361 735268. Understated, friendly
café overlooking the sea, perfect at any time of day.
Equally tasty Indonesian and Western mains vie for
attention on the menu, and the breakfasts (Rp36,000-

KUTA AND TUBAN

giant breakfast (from Rp25,000) after their early morning
surf. Browse the photos of famous surfers on the walls
while enjoying a stack of pancakes, eggs done any way
or a fruit salad with muesli and yoghurt. Also good for
dinner and cocktails. Daily 7.30am-11.30pm.
Jimbaran Seafood Restaurants Jimbaran Beach,
4km south of Kuta (about Rp50,000 by taxi). More than
fifty seafood warung barbecue the day's catch at tables on
the beach here (from around Rp60,000 with trimmings);
they open from noon but are best by candlelight at night.
Mama's German Restaurant Jl Legian W bali-mamas
.com. Open all day, every day, serving all manner of
German specialities, notably sausages (from Rp65,000)
and Black Forest gateau, as well as cold beer (from
Rp30,000). Daily 24hr.
Pasar Senggol Jl Blambangan. Kuta's main night market
is busy with hot-food stalls serving inexpensive Indone-
sian food to locals and thrifty travellers. Daily 5pm-late.

Run by a pair of Australians, this joint serves the best
burgers in Kuta (Rp30,000-65,000); try the chilli-spiked
Portuguese chicken version. Daily 7am-1am.
Warung Indonesia Gang Ronta. Welcoming, budget
warung with an inviting selection of Balinese dishes,
Trattoria Jl Oberoi. Outstanding home-style Italian
cuisine; the pizzas (Rp53,000-74,000) and the daily
specials are the best-value options. Save some room for
the divine chocolate tart with orange jam. The house wines
are reasonably priced for Indonesia. Daily noon-10pm.
Waroeng Asia Jl Double Six 23. Shady restaurant
that's an expat favourite for its palate-tingling, well-priced
Thai food (mains Rp43,000-75,000). Arrive early to bag a
seat - it fills up fast. Daily 11am-10.30pm.
Zula Jl Dhyana Pura T 0361 732723. Under the same
management as Earth Café (see above), Zula has a similar
ethos, with a focus on fresh smoothies, juices, lassis, tea
or tonic (there are special concoctions that claim to cure
everything from anxiety to constipation). Great cakes and
chocolates too. Daily 7am-11pm.
