Nelayan Jl Mongonsidi 4B-E T 0751 32238. A sparkling
two-storey seafood restaurant with views of the beach.
The top floor has a/c and nightly live music, and friendly
owner Chandra is more than happy to show customers
the daily catch. Mains start from about Rp40,000, and
groups can order by the kilo (crab Rp250,000; lobster
Rp400,000). Daily 11am-11pm.
Padang Beach Cafés Jl Samudra. The beach has a collec-
tion of nondescript cafés and restaurants serving simple
Indonesian food and drinks ( nasi goreng Rp10,000). The
tables on the sand are the best spot in the city to enjoy a cold
beverage and watch the sunset. Daily 8am-after midnight.
Warkop Nipah Jl Nipah Berok 1D. Bright and spacious
whitewashed café next door to Golden Homestay and two
doors down from Yani . A popular breakfast and lunchtime
hangout, it features a range of Indonesian favourites
cooked just off the roadside ( nasi goreng Rp12,000). Daily
7am-2pm.
Post o ce The main post o ce is conveniently located at
Jl Bagindo Azizchan 7, just north of the junction with Jl
Moh Yamin (Mon-Fri 7.30am-6pm, Sat & Sun 9am-3pm).
BUKITTINGGI
Situated on the eastern edge of Ngarai
Sianok Canyon with the conical peaks of
Merapi and Singgalang rising to the
south, the bustling town of BUKITTINGGI
is a wonderful base for exploring the
Minangkabau Highlands. Although
chaotic and sprawling, its town centre,
which is of most interest to visitors, is
relatively compact and easy to negotiate.
he most useful landmark is Djam
Gadang, the clock tower at the junction
of Jalan A Yani (the main thoroughfare)
and Jalan Sudirman (the main road
leading out of town to the south).
Bukittinggi's Pasar Atas (Upper Market)
stretches to the south of the tower, while
down the hill to the north and west lies
Pasar Bawah (Lower Market), both of
which swell to bursting point on
Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Jalan A Yani, 1km from north to south, is
the tourist hub of Bukittinggi, and most
