PADANG
he seaside city of PADANG is an
important transport hub for the rest of
Sumatra. Famous for its spicy local
cuisine, Makanan Padang (Padang food),
the city's climate is equally extreme: hot
and humid, with the highest rainfall in
Indonesia at 4508mm a year. For most
travellers, Padang is little more than a
transit point for Bukittinggi or the nearby
Mentawai Islands, especially since the
devastating 7.9-magnitude earthquake in
2009, which killed 1300 people, leaving
around one million temporarily
