Probolinggo run up to the crater rim
from 6am to 5pm, returning from 8am
till 4pm. Organized tours are available
everywhere, but be warned that operators
in both Probolinggo and Cemoro Lawang
have dire reputations for dishonesty; get
everything you've paid for in writing
before setting off.
he national park o ce (daily 24hr) in
Cemoro Lawang has displays about the
area, while Hotel Yoschi is good for local
information, especially if you want to
trek. here's a health centre in Ngadisari,
Jalan Raya Bromo 6.
ACCOMMODATION
For such a small place, there is plenty of accommodation
to choose from in Cemoro Lawang, Ngadisari (3km from
the rim) and Wonokerto (5km). Prices are higher than
elsewhere in Java, starting at around Rp100,000 for ultra-
basic rooms. There are dozens of nondescript homestays
charging around Rp100,000 for a basic double, and you
can camp anywhere: Penanjakan is popular, though you
will be disturbed at sunrise, and there's a good site 200m
along the rim from the Lava View Lodge . There are a few
small places to eat in the vicinity of Cemoro Lawang, and
most of the hotels have restaurants.
Café Lava Hostel T 0335 541020. A popular choice set
right by the rim of the crater, with a great travellers' vibe and
a range of options, from economy rooms with shared cold-
water mandi to exorbitantly priced superior rooms with big
beds and cable TV (Rp554,000). There is a good restaurant
with wi-fi and there are lovely sitting areas i n the garde n.
Rooms can get cold during the winter months. Rp218,000

W yoschihotel.com. A cosy place with numerous room
options (from cramped economy rooms with shared
bathrooms to comfortable family bungalows), eclectic
decor and a great garden for relaxing. Staff provide good
information on the area, and also book bus tickets, arrange
local guides, charter transport and rent warm jackets
(Rp25,000). Discounts are available d uring quiet periods,
and breakfast is included. Rp270,000
BANYUWANGI
On the easternmost shores of Java, the
pleasant town of Banyuwangi serves as a
base for the hike to Kawah Crater, while
Ketapang, 8km to the north, is the port
for ferries to Gilimanuk in Bali. Buses
travelling to or from Bali head straight to
the ferry terminal, bypassing the town.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE
By ferry The ferry terminal is situated 8km north at
Ketapang. Bemos #6 and #12 link the town centre
(Rp10,000). The 24hr service to Bali (50min; Rp7000)
departs every 20min.
By bus Two bus terminals serve Banyuwangi. Most useful
long-distance routes depart from Sri Tanjung, situated 2km
north of Ketapang and connecting Probolinggo, Surabaya
and Yogyakarta, among other Javan cities, via the northern
road. Brawijaya terminal, from where buses head south
before curving west into Java, is 4km to the south of town.
Destinations Bandung (daily; 21hr); Jakarta (daily; 22hr);
Jember (every 15min; 3hr); Probolinggo (5 hourly; 5hr);
Solo (hourly; 11-13hr); Surabaya (every 30min; 6-7 hr);
Yogyakarta (hourly; 13-14hr).
By train The main train station is in Ketapang, 300m
west of the ferry terminal.
Destinations Probolinggo (2 daily; 5hr); Surabaya (2 daily;
7hr).

INFORMATION
Tourist o ce The friendly tourist information o ce
(Mon-Fri 7am-4pm; T 0335 424172) is near the town
centre at Jl A Yani 78.
ACCOMMODATION AND EATING
Street stalls and warung are plentiful in the city centre,
especially along the corner of Jl Wahid Hasyim and Jl
MT Haryono.

Set just off a busy road 200m from the bemo station, this
scruffy losmen ha s a helpful owner and worn rooms that
are OK for a night. Rp60,000
Hotel Baru Jl MT Hariyono 82-84 T 0333 421369. Basic
hotel with enthusiastic, English-speaking staff, in a quiet,
central location a 10min walk from the post o ce.
Economy rooms come with attached mandi, and the price
goes up for a fan (Rp90,000) or a /c (Rp160, 000), though
all come with wi-fi and breakfast. Rp75,000
TREAT YOURSELF
Lava View Lodge Cemoro Lawang
T 0335 541009. This family-run place is
in high demand, largely due to the
unmatched views from the restaurant
and upper bungalows. Although slightly
aged, the lodge has decent en-suite
rooms, a great Indonesian buffet
(included with room price), live music
and a volleyball court. To get there, go
past the drab-looking square and follow
the m ain track t owards the lip of the
crater. Rp580,000
