the intersection with Jl Pemuda (Rp4000-5000).
Bungurasih also has a huge taxi rank - minimum fare of
Rp10,000; expect to pay about Rp40,000 to anywhere in
town. Long-distance journeys are completed by night
buses (departing 2-6pm); tickets are available from the
o ces within the bus station as well as from agents on Jl
Basuki Rahmat in the city centre. Book ahead. For Jakarta,

Denpasar (4 daily; 11hr); Jakarta (20 daily; 14hr);

By ferry Pelni ferries dock at Tanjung Perak in the far
north of the city, served by #C, #P and #PAC buses. The
main Pelni o ce is at Jl Pahlawan 112 (Mon-Thurs 9am-
noon & 1-3pm, Fri & Sat 9am-noon; T 031 353 9048).
Destinations Jakarta (2 weekly; 21-24hr); Jayapura (Mon
& Wed; 5-6 days); Makassar (Mon, Tues & Wed; 24hr);
Nunakan (fortnightly; 4-5 days); Samarinda (fortnightly;

By train Surabaya has three main train stations. Most
useful to travellers are Gubeng, in the centre of town near
most accommodation, serving the routes to Banyaungi
and Yogyakarta; and Pasar Turi, west of the city centre,
serving the faster, northerly route to Jakarta.

A good budget hotel, with friendly Dutch and English-
speaking staff and clean rooms in a quiet but centrally
located colonial bungalow. Rooms at the back have
verandas set around a courtyard and all have attached
cold-water mandi. Southbound buses #P1 and #P2 sto p
just at the end of the street on Jl Tunjungan. Rp126,500

1388. Though not quite sparkling and somewhat less than
friendly, rooms are clean and offer good value. It's also just
a short walk from the train station. Room 25 (Rp155,000)
with huge windows and a/c is the best. Th ere is also a
kitchen, wi-fi and a simple breakfast included. Rp135,000
EATING AND DRINKING
There is a huge selection of cheap food stalls by the river, past
the flower market on Jl Kalun, serving Indonesian coffee,
grilled fish and chicken dishes for the mainly local clientele.
One of the local favourites is rawon , a thick, black beef soup
served throughout the night at Surabaya's warungs.
House of Sampoerna Café Jl Taman Sampoerna. Set
in an elegant colonial building attached to the famous
cigarette factory of the same name, this posh café's menu
features Western and Indonesian cuisine (barbecue beef
soup Rp30,000), as well as smoking and non-smoking
sections. Daily 9am-10pm.
Lido Pub Jl Mayjen Sungkono 8-9. Close to the
Shangri-La Hotel , this is a smoky little dive bar, popular
with expats for its laidback atmosphere, good live music
starting around 9pm, standard pub fare (mains from
Rp40,000) and cheap beer. There is a nightclub upstairs at
weekends. Daily 10am-1am.
New Javana Jl Sulawesi 44. A popular seafood restaurant
serving a good selection of grilled fish, crab and octopus
dishes (from Rp35,000-38,000). It's set just off a noisy
thoroughfare, and there's wi-fi in the sleek, spotless a/c
interior. Daily 10am-10pm.
Ria Galeria Jl Bangka 2-4. This beautifully decorated
Javanese restaurant offers affordable Indonesian
specialities (oxtail soup Rp48,000, fried rice with chicken
sate Rp32,500), served in elegant surroundings. Daily
11am-9.30pm.

or longer, plus international bookings. Among the largest,
