2013 down the lane opposite KL Village. Rooms are
spotless and come with sparkling bathrooms, flatscreen

on the uppe r floors are otherwise identical to the rest.

its age, and though a tad stuffy, the well-furnished rooms
come with a/c, cable TV and hot water, and the price
includes a simple breakfast and wi-fi in the lobby/popular
restau rant downst airs. Street-facing rooms get noisy at

Tator Jl Jaksa 37 T 021 3192 3940; map p.180. This cool
and quiet family-run hotel is a travellers' favourite and is
often fully booked. Spread across three storeys, the ageing
but well-kept rooms all have a/c and inside bathrooms.
Breakfast is included in the price a nd there is a lovely
seating area at the front. Rp160,000

Thai cuisine (including roti canai for Rp8000 and an amazing
tom yum soup for Rp17,000). Packed in the evenings, so be

Memories Jl Jaksa 17 T 021 392 8839; map p.180. The
most popular evening drinking den on Jl Jaksa and a great
place to meet fellow travellers. There is a huge menu of
Western and Indonesian dishes, though most patrons
don't come for the food, which is on the expensive side
(chicken sate Rp36,000). It also has one of Jaksa's largest
libraries as well as some decent rooms on offer (fan or a/c
Rp100,000/175,000). Daily 8am-2am.
Pappa's Jl Jaksa 41; map p.180. Great place for a curry
(Rp38,000) at the quieter southern end of Jl Jaksa. Pappa's
supplements its Indian dishes with live European football
and is a popular travellers' hangout day and night. Bintang
Rp30,000. Daily 8.30am-4am.
Warung Desa Jl HA Salim 55A; map p.180. A trendy little
place that is always packed with locals and travellers.
Offers a good range of seafood dishes, Chinese favourites
and international cuisine ( nasi goreng Rp9,000, kwetiauw
goreng seafood Rp21,000). Daily 24hr.

Al Jazeerah Jl Raden Saleh 58, Cikini W aljazeerah
injakarta.com; map p.178. Authentic Middle Eastern
restaurant serving pan-Arab cuisine, a good change if
you've had your fill of the nasi goreng and toasted
sandwiches of Jl Jaksa, with a pricey but mouthwatering
menu of kebabs, hummus dishes (Rp46,000), salads and
good Turkish coffee. Daily 10am-3am.
Café Batavia Taman Fatahillah, Kota; map p.178. A classy
café and restaurant housed in one of central Jakarta's oldest
buildings, with great views across the square. The expensive
and predominantly Western menu is good but not excep-
tional (club sandwich Rp79,000); it's the historic setting
you're paying for. Mon-Thurs 8am-midnight, Fri 8am-1am,
Sat 7am-1am, Sun 7am-midnight.
Eastern Promise Jl Kemang Raya 5; map p.178.
Combined British pub and Indian restaurant with good
pub-style food. Popular among expats, the meat pies
(Rp65,000) are fantastic. There's a pool table, several LCD

short hop of the city centre, this friendly new hostel has
all-a/c rooms and dorms, one of which comes with a
private bathroom (Rp300,000). Designed for backpackers,
it has a welcoming lounge with fast, free wi-fi and
computers, a rooftop garden, a pool table and a kitchen

There is more variation to the cuisine here than elsewhere in
the country, from a wealth of affordable fine dining options
to a thriving street food scene.

Some of the best-value street food in the city can be found
at the stalls crammed along Jl HA Salim.

Something different in this largely generic area, this sleek
establishment serves good hummus with tahini (Rp25,000),
shawarma sandwiches (Rp30,000), grilled meats and a
decent range of mezze and shisha (Rp35,000). There's an
a/c section and an outdoor terrace overlooking the busy
intersection. Daily 9am-2am.

the street and deservedly the most popular with both locals
and travellers, serving cheap Indonesian food ( nasi goreng

finest restaurant has a fantastic old-world
vibe. A large gong is sounded to greet
each diner to this 1920s Dutch villa in
Cikini, which is adorned with elegant
colonial paintings and a crystal chandelier.
The menu ranges from lobster thermidor
(Rp630,000) to roasted duck (Rp342,000).
