The Elms of Hobart This lovely National Trust-classified mansion is too far
from the city to walk to, and I think both the Islington and Macquarie Manor
are nicer. However, it's just .5km ( 1 3 mile) from a wide range of restaurants along
the popular North Hobart food strip. Each room has heritage appeal and is fur-
nished with antiques. There is a “grog” room where guests can help themselves
to beers and wines on an honor system and a quaint front living room. Two out-
standing features are the Tasmanian Oak staircase and paneling. Bedrooms at
the front face onto the road and can be noisy. Smoking is not permitted.

Islington Elegant Private Hotel This 1845 private home is popular with
American travelers. Rooms are large and simple, each with a queen-size bed and
TV. The Grand rooms are slightly roomier. Antiques, cedar woodwork, and ele-
gant furnishings contribute to an air of gentility. French doors open onto a garden
and a pool. The breakfast room is small and sunny, and the chessboard, piano, and
open fire add charm to the front parlor. The last time I visited, the guests had
found the place so relaxing they'd all retired for their afternoon snooze. Smoking
is not permitted.

The Lodge on Elizabeth The Lodge on Elizabeth is located in the second-
oldest building in Tasmania, with some parts of it dating back to 1810. Originally
a gentleman's residence, it later became the first private boy's school in Tasmania.
It's well situated just a 12-minute walk from Salamanca Place and is surrounded
by restaurants. All rooms are decorated with antiques, and many are quite roman-
tic, with four-poster beds. Standard rooms have just a shower, whereas the deluxe
rooms come with more antiques and a large granite bathroom with a tub.
Complimentary drinks are served in the communal living room in the evenings,
and a good continental breakfast buffet goes for A$12 (US$7.80).

Macquarie Manor As soon as you walk into this classic colonial-style
manor you'll know you want to stay. Macquarie Manor was built in 1875 as a
doctor's surgery and residence. Extra rooms were added in 1950. Thick carpets
and double-glazed windows keep the place very quiet, even though the Manor
is on the main road. Rooms, which vary enormously, are comfortable and ele-
gantly furnished. One room is suitable for people with disabilities. The staff is
very friendly and will be happy to escort you around the premises in search of
your favorite room. Check out the delightful dining room, and the drawing
