Kangaroo Island Lodge Though Kangaroo Island Lodge was built in
1801, renovations in late 1999 so overhauled the place that you would be hard
pressed to find anything rustic remaining. What you have is a very nicely
appointed property with pleasant, quiet motel-style rooms, a good swimming
pool, Jacuzzi and sauna, and a restaurant and bar (entrees average
A$20/US$13). The lodge looks over Pelican Lagoon (famous for its, well, peli-
cans), but it's a little too far away from it to make the waterview double rooms
really worth the extra cost.

dinnertime can be a hoot, with guests sipping beers and wine around the dining-
room table and tucking into King George whiting caught that day. There are other

IN PARNDANA
Developed by soldier-settlers after World War II, Parndana today is a rural serv-
ice center situated a 25-minute drive from Seal Bay and Stokes Bay, and just
around the corner from Parndana Wildlife Park, which has more than 50 aviaries
with collections of native and other birds, some of them rare and protected.
The Open House The best thing about the Open House is mealtimes,
when the guests get together and sit around a communal table and dive into
delicious home-cooked meals. The rooms—two with queen-size beds, one with
two singles, and a family room sleeping up to four—are comfortable and homey
and come with a private bathroom with shower. The owners are friendly and can
