EXPENSIVE
The Russell This is the coziest place to stay in The Rocks, and per-
haps in all of Sydney. It's more than 100 years old, and it shows its age wonder-
fully in the creak of the floorboards and the ramshackle feel of its brightly painted
corridors. Every room is different in style, size, and shape; all come with a queen-
size bed and most have cable TV. (Others can have a TV moved in if requested.)
All rooms have immense character, including a series of rooms added on in 1990
above the Fortune of War Hotel next door. There are no harbor views, but from
some rooms you can see the tops of the ferry terminals at Circular Quay. Guests
have the use of a comfortable sitting room, a living room with magazines and
books, and a rooftop garden. The apartment is large, open plan with a king-size
bed and small kitchen suitable for three people. (There's a double sofa bed.) It
overlooks Circular Quay. The place was refurbished in 2000 and 2001.

The Sebel Pier One Sydney A premier waterfront hotel, the Sebel
is located within the historic Woolloomooloo Wharf complex and has been
painstakingly renovated so as to leave as much of the original structure intact as
possible. It's a wonderfully intoxicating blend of old wooden beams and tasteful
modern art. The only drawback to staying in one of their tastefully appointed
waterfront rooms is that the harbor views through windows that run all the way
to the floor could make you want to stay in for the rest of the day. But then
again, perhaps the cocktail bar is more your scene, touted as one of the trendi-
est in town.

The Stafford The Stafford offers some of the best-positioned serviced apart-
ments in Sydney, right in the heart of The Rocks, very close to the harbor and
Circular Quay, and a short stroll from the central business district. The property
consists of modern apartments in a six-story building (the best units, for their
harbor and Opera House views, are on the top three floors) and seven two-story
terrace houses dating from 1870 to 1895. The Stafford is highly recommended
for its location, spacious rooms, and fully equipped kitchen.
