The Effect of Electricity Upon Soil Particles
The Electrolysis of Water
Back to science class… Try to recall the electrolysis experiment mentioned above. The
teacher hooked up a battery to a container of water that had upside down test tubes over
each electrical contact. After a short while, the teacher would say that the electricity from
the battery broke down the water molecules leaving hydrogen gas in one test tube and
oxygen gas in the other. The fun part of the experiment happened when they ignited both
tubes and the one with the hydrogen gas would make a loud “pop!” The mechanism that
allowed the water to be split into two parts is called electrolysis.
