Database Reference
In-Depth Information
The Data Guard toolkit gives the DBA a wealth of options to choose from. Many sites will likely use very few
standby databases, if not just one. Given enough available storage however more than one standby database can be
created. A physical standby in a data center a safe distance away is almost mandatory. In addition to the remote and
true disaster recovery database local standby databases can be created to test hot fixes in a snapshot standby without
compromising business continuity by taking the true DR database out of the configuration. Other Data Guard use
cases for local standby databases are offloading backups or reporting.
Data Guard Broker is one of the most convenient tools to administer Data Guard configurations and is thoroughly
recommended.
In the chapter that follows you can read in detail how to implement a Data Guard configuration, how to test it and
how to perform role transitions. The creation of the standby database is equally important and will also be discussed
in depth.
