Database Reference
In-Depth Information
Another reason Linux is a desirable platform comes from Oracle Corporation. When the development/reference
platform for the database and some other products changed to Linux the Linux support from Oracle became a lot
better. Rather than having to wait for a port from the reference platform, Oracle Support can coordinate the release of
corrections a lot more efficiently.
Summary
This chapter has introduced the key ideas and my motivation to write the rest of the topic. With economic problems
weighing heavily on the world, companies are either in the process or starting to reduce head count in what they
perceive as “expensive labor” countries. The remaining staff quite often faces a high workload requiring a high degree
of efficiency to deal with it.
Efficiency can be increased by standardizing the database environments to the highest degree possible.
Standardization cries for automation! Rolling out software in exactly the same way every single time is challenging at
best. Most likely the human factor will play in, creating subtle differences between environments which are difficult
to diagnose and troubleshoot. A scripted deployment is more deterministic than any human could ever be. It also
relieves the DBAs from mundane tasks.
Cloud computing is a quickly evolving subject, and companies can make good use of its concepts where they
fit the organization. Many sites might decide that the principles of the public cloud can equally be applied in their
own data centers. Similar to the rollout of the Oracle binaries, the creation of a database does not necessarily have
to involve a DBA. Self-service portals with automatic chargeback workflows have the potential to transition to a
“Database as a Service” environment.
The final aspect in this chapter mentioned the Linux operating environment. Thanks to its flexibility and wide
industry support based on standard components the Linux platform excels as a consolidation target for many
workloads. This is not to say that every single workload in the world should be moved to the Linux platform. There are
many applications out there requiring mission critical platforms.
The following chapters will develop these ideas and show you possible ways to achieve these goals with the
latest-generation Oracle database.
