Starting from the top you see the managed targets: the database servers and the databases. Each monitored
server shown in Figure 8-1 has a local agent installed, which in turn communicates with a phalanx of Oracle
Management Servers (OMS) via a load balancer. The load balancer is a convenient way to hide an arbitrary number
of Management Servers behind a common IP address. In the basic configuration a load balancer will distribute
incoming requests in a DNS round-robin fashion to the management hosts. Ideally the load balancer is capable of
taking load metrics of the OMSs into account and distributes load to the least loaded server. In a more advanced
setup you could use a number of OMSs for agent uploads only while the remaining ones serve users. In addition to
the agents that upload their performance metrics to the Management Service, users also connect to it to display the
graphical user interface shown in Figure 8-2 .
