Database Reference
In-Depth Information
The Grid Infrastructure layer provides a common user interface to the database in addition to the Automatic Storage
Management instance. The immediate benefit in addition to ASM is the auto-start facility offered by Oracle Restart.
In terms of the installation an interactive, silent, and RPM-based installation has been shown. The examples
have been tested on Oracle Linux 6.4 and were correct at the time of writing. Hopefully the code snippets stir your
creativity in automating the installation of the database. A consistent, standard compliant setup will be the end result,
making future maintenance a lot easier. You might of course say that a clone of an Oracle software home is a better
alternative, and there is merit in that argument. Cloning the Oracle home however requires engineering to create a
new “golden” image-base release plus PSU or one-off patch even to be created. For each supported release, and each
platform. The software must of course be validated and tested, problems in the software release can have far-reaching
consequences. If your engineering department can produce such builds: great! But many may struggle to find
sufficient time to do so.
