Buying a tent: first steps
It's not quite as bad as buying a house, but figuring
out what kind of tent you need can seem confusing.
Don't look at a tent until you've considered some
key questions:
Before you buy, ask yourself:
How many people will use it? One? Two? Three? A family?
Will you be sharing with kids? Do you want a family tent
with separate sleeping quarters? Or will the children have
their own tent? Do you need to be able to stand up in it?
What time of year will you be camping? Just summer? Or
will you need something cozier for the cooler months?
Will the climate be hot or cold? If it's a hot climate, you'll
need to keep cool. If it's cold, you'll need a tent that can
cope with strong winds and heavy rain.
How will you transport it ? Will you be car camping at or
going light and carrying your tent on your back?
How easy will it be to put up and pack away? If you're
backpacking you'll be putting it up and taking it down
regularly and you might need to do it in bad weather.
What level of quality do you want? Cheaper tents won't
last as long. Unless you're a very sporadic camper, invest
in as much quality as you can afford.
