Rosemont
Not to be confused with the more comfortable and more expen-
sive Rosedon Hotel, which is located nearby, Rosemont is a cluster of gray-walled
cottages, each with a large veranda, on a flowered hillside near the Hamilton Prin-
cess. Two of the cottages are former private homes, built in the 1940s; the rest are
more modern structures constructed within the past 2 decades. The harbor is visible
from the raised terrace. Business travelers, “subdued” families, and older couples
frequent Rosemont, attracted by its peace and tranquility. There is a policy here to
“keep it quiet,” so the hotel usually doesn't accept college students or large groups.
Rooms are well-furnished, though we find some a little on the dark side. As many
as three rooms can be joined together to accommodate families. The hotel also has
three suites with private entrances and better furnishings. Each room comes with a
kitchen and a small but neat private tiled bathroom.
There's no restaurant on the premises; everybody cooks in. A grocery store is close
by, downtown City of Hamilton is 10 minutes away, and Elbow Beach is a 15-minute
scooter or taxi ride away. Management presents a complimentary buffet of coffee and
muffins every morning.

Paraquet Guest Apartments
If you'll settle for a no-frills type of place, evok-
ing a roadside motel, this is the cheapest option for those who want to lodge only a
5-minute walk from Elbow Beach, one of the island's best. Rooms are well main-
tained but furnished in a very basic style. A family-owned business for some 30 years,
Paraquet rents mainly efficiency units, some with two bedrooms accommodating up
to five guests. There is also a trio of cottages, each a non-efficiency unit with a spa-
cious bedroom, a small refrigerator, and patio. In the courtyard, guests can lounge
under umbrellas or barbecue their dinners. The Paraquet Restaurant is nearby, evok-
ing an American diner with family meals offered at moderate prices.

Royal Palms Hotel
Just a 5-minute walk from the City of Hamilton, the
Royal Palms is one of the most sought-after small hotels on the island, thanks to the
care and restoration work of owners (and siblings) Richard Smith and Susan Weare
and their polite, hardworking staff. Built in 1903, it's a fine example of Bermudian
architecture, with coral-colored walls, white shutters, a white roof, and a wraparound
front porch with rocking chairs and armchairs. The closest beach is Elbow Beach, a
10-minute taxi or scooter ride or a 30-minute walk away.
