Watercolours England-born entrepreneur Carole Holding—owner of the
Carole Holding Studio (p. 171) gift shops—rents two of the most charming bed-
rooms on record within her private home. They lie within an unconventional and
extraordinary house: Built to her specifications in 1996, it occupies land once devoted
to a boatbuilding yard directly at waterside on the channel leading in and out of Ham-
ilton's harbor; each unit has ocean views. The design of the house allows guests to have
virtually the entire ground floor of the building to themselves. Throughout, the place
is gracious, immaculate, and outfitted in color schemes of coral and white. Breakfasts
are stylish, and Carole, a gracious hostess with strong points of view about what's good
and what's not in Bermuda, is on hand for advice about nearby dining. The pier, where
you can catch a ferry to downtown Hamilton, is a 3-minute walk away.

PEMBROKE PARISH (CITY OF HAMILTON)
Mazarine by the Sea Lying a mile from the City of Hamilton, this cluster of
apartments stands on the edge of a wild, windswept promontory overlooking the
ocean. The special feature of the complex is a private pool set high on a cliff on the
island's North Shore. There aren't any hotel services, and the setting is in a residential
area, so you'll have to commute by bus to the beaches and into the capital itself.
The apartments are furnished in a basic, yet comfortable style and are well main-
tained. Five of the units open onto views of the water. Even though it's not on a
beach, you can deep-water swim here and also snorkel. A small dive center is on site,
offering both scuba and snorkeling opportunities.

Robin's Nest Consider Robin's Nest if you'd like a snug and utterly unpretentious
little apartment in a sleepy, family-managed compound in a residential neighborhood.
It consists of several buildings scattered amid a small but well-maintained garden
that's supervised by Milt and Renée Robinson. Units are spacious and have a sum-
mery-looking decor that includes lots of wicker. Each unit contains a fully equipped
kitchen and a bathroom with a tub/shower combination. The most desirable rooms
here are eight studios added in 2008 overlooking the pool. Each unit is equipped for
full housekeeping, with an excellent modern kitchen, and each comes with a private
balcony opening onto a view. Hibachis are available in case you want to expand your
cooking facilities into the great outdoors. Two coves, suitable for swimming, lie within
a 10-minute walk of the compound.
