maize (for animal feed), high-oil maize for maize oil extraction, waxy maize for
industrial starch, and silage maize for animal fodder.
Sorghum appears very similar to maize in the vegetative stages. It is also a member
of the grass family with both male and female flower parts in a single panicle emerging
from the top of the plant as shown in Figure 3.9. Modern varieties are usually short (1 to
2 m), older varieties were much taller, sometimes growing as much as 5 m tall.
