Steve Murphy and his brother raise around 1000 ha of
maize and soybeans each year. About 500 ha are planted to nontransgenic maize,
240 ha to herbicide-tolerant transgenic soybeans for sale, 80 ha of herbicide-tolerant
transgenic soybeans for sale as seed, and 120 ha of nontransgenic tofu soybeans.
They are experimenting with herbicide-tolerant maize (Fig. 12.3) to see if the
lowered cost of herbicide application will pay for the extra cost of the transgenic
seed. Their decision will depend strictly on economics.
