What happened in India to allow these increases to take place? Although many
factors affected this increase, three are notable: irrigation, fertilizer, and tractors. The
trends for each of these factors can be easily seen in Figure 11.2. There were significant
increases in all three factors during the years 1961 - 2000 corresponding to the increases
in wheat and rice production.
