When considering the state of world crop and animal production, we sometimes
forget why we should be concerned with global agriculture. The obvious answer is
that all humans must eat. If someone does not have enough to eat, why cannot we
just send some of our surplus food? But what if we do not have surplus food?
Human history is full of stories of widespread death by starvation. Highly variable
food supplies have been the norm for traditional agriculture throughout most of
human history. Can we change our own history? We begin with a quick look at
that history.
