In the United States Steve uses an electric pump to pump water from the well to
the house and for the cattle and pigs; see Figure 9.15. The well is covered by a
cement slab and a round access cover and surrounded by a small enclosure, called a
pump house, which protects the well and pump. Steve paid for digging the well,
putting in the covering, house, pump, and all the necessary piping to carry water to
the house and animals. However, only a small amount of his monthly electric bill
