In the United States incorporation of organic matter coupled with lower rainfall
and cooler temperatures during the spring, fall, and winter are conducive to buildup
of organic matter and the development of a prominent A horizon; see Figure 9.3. Vari-
ations in color of the B horizons shows that there is poor water drainage in this soil.
