7.8.1 Aquatic Species Cultivated
Many types of aquatic animals and even plants are cultivated by humans to eventually
harvest for food. The most popular types are shown in Table 7.3. Within each type of
aquatic animal there are several general classes of animals and many species of each
are cultivated.
The most widely cultivated aquatic animals are carp and tilapia. There are many
species of each. Only a few can be covered in this chapter. Among the more
common carp species cultivated are silver carp (Hypophthalmichtys molitrix), big
head (Aristichthys nobilis), grass carp (Ctenopharyngoden idellus), black carp
(Mylopharyngodon piceus), and common carp (Cyprinus carpio) shown in Figure 7.28.
The common tilapia species cultivated are Tilapia mossambica and Tilapia nilo-
tica. The most common species cultivated in the United States is Tilapia mossambica
shown in Figure 7.29.
