also have high levels, and grapes have the lowest level. Raspberries have the highest
level of vitamin A while blackberries have the second highest level, grapes the third
highest, and all the others have relatively low levels. Raspberries and blackberries
have the highest levels of B vitamins with all the other berries having moderate levels.
Mulberries have the highest level of iron and a high level of potassium. Black-
berries and raspberries also have higher levels of iron and potassium. Grapes have a
high level of potassium while the other berries have a moderate level. Mulberries
also have the highest levels of calcium while raspberries and blackberries have a
high level and the other berries have from moderate to low levels.
6.8
NUTS
6.8.1 Climatic Adaptation
Nut trees are grown in all climatic conditions, however, each type of nut is typically
restricted to one climate. Walnuts and chestnuts are typically grown in temperate
regions while cashews are grown in tropical areas.
6.8.2 Importance in Human Nutrition
Most nuts are eaten as snacks and thus do not add greatly to the dietary intake of most
people. However, when eaten, nuts can provide needed dietary inputs as seen in the
section on the nutritional characteristics of nuts given below.
