Subtropical fruits developed in the Orient with the exception of the grapefruit,
which developed from the shaddock also known as the pummelo (many variations
on the spelling are given in the Glossary). However, the exact development of the
grapefruit and the origin of the shaddock are both unknown.
6.3.10 Other Fruit-Producing Plants
In addition to trees, fruits are produced on several other types of plants. In the tropics
banana and coconut are grown on treelike plants. Both banana and coconut are shown
in Figure 6.1. Figures 6.7 and 6.8 show the outside and inside of a coconut, respectively.
