FRUITS, BERRIES, AND NUTS
6.1 FRUIT, BERRY, AND NUT PRODUCTION ON
THE THREE FARMS
Of the three farmers only A ´ da and Octavio grow large amounts of fruits and berries,
and none of the three grows nuts for either home use or sale.
Donio does not grow any berries or nuts; he does, however, have some bananas
growing along the edges of his fields, as seen in Figure 6.1. He will often use these
as either a snack or as a source of carbohydrate in his family's diet. Donio does not
practice any kind of management other than to plant the banana plants and harvest
the bananas. Suckers are taken from an existing banana plant and transplanted to
produce a new banana plant, or the suckers are allowed to grow in place and
produce what bananas they will. There is no weeding nor any fertilization of bananas.
Steve does not grow any fruits, berries, or nuts, although there are wild berries and
nut trees growing on his farm and the lands he rents. He does not harvest these and does
not use them as a source of food.
A ´ da and Octavio grow seven different fruits that are only eaten by the family:
Persea spp. (avocado/aguacate ), Carica spp. (papaya/Babaco ), Fragaria spp.
A banana plant will produce only one stalk of bananas. Young plants, suckers, will grow from the roots of the
old banana plant, and these will produce more bananas. Suckers may be left to grow around the old plant or be
transplanted.
First name in parentheses is the common English name, after the slash is the common local name. Also see
