VEGETABLE PRODUCTION IN EACH FARMING SYSTEM
Donio has no garden and produces little in the way of what would be called vegetables.
He does grow camote (boniato), which is planted around the fields, as shown in
Chapter 5. It is also called sweet potato, and its leaves are also harvested and used as
a vegetable in the diet.
A ยด da and Octavio have a large garden (Fig. 4.1) used to grow a large variety of
vegetables. It is intensively cultivated and kept productive by the addition of manure
and compost. In addition, it is irrigated so that vegetable production is continuous
throughout the year. Of the 21 vegetables grown (Table 4.1) 62 percent are used
both in the home and are sold in the market, and the remaining 38 percent are only
used in the home. The vegetables are grown in raised beds formed in the garden.
The garden is equipped with drip irrigation (Chapter 9 for further information
about drip irrigation), which allows them to grow vegetables all year around. Water
for irrigation, supplied by the local water system (Chapter 9), is taken from a
holding tank, filtered, and fed into the drip irrigation system.
Steve does not grow any vegetables, although his son does have a small vegetable
garden that supplies a small amount of vegetables for the family during the summer.
