The grain is formed on a loose panicle containing both male and female flower
parts as shown in Figure 3.24. The stems of some varieties that grow in flood-prone
areas reach up to 5 m in length, but more common irrigated and upland varieties
seldom grow over 100 cm tall. The hull of the rice kernel is tightly attached to the
seed and must be removed before consumption.
3.4.4 Origin
The specific origin of rice has been difficult to identify. It appears to have developed in
an area stretching from south of the Himalaya mountains through Myanmar, Thailand,
