Wheat is believed to have been domesticated before 8000 BC with direct descen-
dents of modern wheat being cultivated around 7000 BC . Some of the ancestors of
modern wheat still grown in regions of the world are einkorn, emmer, spelt, and
durum. Only durum remains as a major type of cultivated wheat today. Modern
bread wheat is probably a result of crosses among several of the ancestors.
