Buda's
grande dame
is a 234-room four-star hotel with loads of character. Completed in
1918, the hotel contains examples of late Art Nouveau, notably the thermal spa's entrance
hall and Zsolnay ceramic fountains. Prices depend on which way your room faces and what
sort of bathroom it has. Use of the thermal baths is free for hotel guests.
The Gellért was the inspiration (but not the actual film location) for the hotel in Wes
Anderson's
The Grand Budapest Hotel,
which opened and then vanished without a trace in
early 2014.

The huge yellow building in which the 'Emperor' is located was built in the 1850s as a con-
vent, which might explain the size of the 45 cell-like rooms. Request one of the superior
rooms, which are larger and look onto the nearby outdoor Olympic-size pools of the huge
Császár-Komjádi swimming complex.

'Grand' might be overstating things a titch, but this colourful hostel does come pretty close,
with its cavern-like cocktail bar, tiled rooms, communal barbecues and DJ nights, to being
'great'. There's a sociable feel and the staff are happy to help arrange all manner of excur-
sions. To get here, take tram 61 to the Kelemen Laszlo utca stop.
