Szentendre
Explore
Szentendre, Hungarian for 'St Andrew', is the gateway to the Danube Bend, the S-shaped
curve in Hungary's mightiest river that begins just below Esztergom and twists and turns for
20km before reaching Budapest. As an art colony turned lucrative tourist centre, Szentendre
strikes many as a little too 'cute', and the town can get pretty crowded in high season. Still,
the many art museums, galleries and Orthodox churches (built largely by Serbians fleeing
unrest in the 18th century), which give the town its unique Balkan feel, make the easy trip
worthwhile.

Top Tip
Szentendre is best avoided on weekends in summer when hordes of tourists descend and
between November and mid-March when much of the town shuts down on weekdays.
Getting There & Away
Bus Buses from Pest's Újpest-Városkapu train station, which is on the M3 blue metro line,
run to Szentendre at least once an hour (370Ft, 25 minutes).
HÉV Trains depart from Batthyány tér in Buda (640Ft, 40 minutes) every 10 to 20
minutes throughout the day. Note that a yellow city bus/metro ticket (350Ft) is good only as
far as the Békásmegyer stop on the way; you'll have to pay 370Ft extra to get to Szentendre.
Many HÉV trains run only as far as Békásmegyer, where you must cross the platform to
board the train for Szentendre. The last train returns to Budapest several minutes after 11pm.
