HUNGARIAN
GUNDEL
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 1-889 8100; www.gundel.hu ; XIV Gundel Károly út 4; mains 3600-25,000Ft;
noon-midnight; M1 Hősök tere)
Gundel, next to the zoo and directly behind the Museum of Fine Arts, is the city's fanciest
(and most famous) restaurant, with a tradition dating back to 1894. Sunday brunch (11.30am
to 3pm; 6800/3400Ft per adult/child), a multicourse themed gobble-fest of cold and warm
dishes and desserts that changes every week, is heartily recommended.
At other times we've always found Gundel to be vastly overpriced, offering little value
for money. Apparently it still feeds the Habsburgs (or what's left of them) when they're in
town.
INTERNATIONAL
ROBINSON
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 1-422 0222; www.robinsonrestaurant.hu ; XIV Városligeti tó; mains
3200-13,700Ft; 11am-5pm & 6-11pm; ; M1 Hősök tere)
Located within the leafy park, Robinson is the place to secure a table on the lakeside terrace
on a warm summer's evening. Starters include goose-liver terrine (3700Ft) and beef-tender-
loin carpaccio (2900Ft), and mains feature grilled fogas (Balaton pike-perch; 4800Ft) and
various meats cooked over charcoal (4500Ft to 13,900Ft). It's pricey, but - as ever - it's all
about location, location, location.
