HEROES' SQUARE & MILLENARY MONUMENT
Heroes' Sq is the largest and most symbolic square in Budapest. Flanked by the two
most important - and luxurious - spaces for art in Pest, the square contains theMil-
Mil-
llennarry Mo
y Monuumentt(Ezeréves emlékmű), a 36m-high pillar backed by colonnades to
the right and left. It was designed in 1896 to mark the 1000th anniversary of the Mag-
yar conquest of the Carpathian Basin.
Seemingly about to take off from the top of the pillar is the Archangel Gabriel, who
is offering Vajk - the future King Stephen - the Hungarian crown. At the base of the
column is a stone cenotaph called theHHerroes Mo
s Monuumentt, dedicated to those 'who
gave their lives for the freedom of our people and our national independence'. Sur-
rounding the column are Árpád and six other Magyar chieftains - Előd, Ond, Kond,
Tas, Huba and Töhötöm (Tétény) - who occupied the Carpathian Basin in the late 9th
century (and even most Hungarians can't name them). The 14 statues in the colon-
nades are ofrrule
d sttattesmen. The four allegorical figures atop are (from left to
right): Work and Prosperity; War; Peace; and Knowledge and Glory.
