In-Depth Information
This huge zoo, which opened with 500 animals in 1866, has an excellent collection of big
cats, hippopotamuses, polar bears and giraffes, and some of the themed houses (eg Mada-
gascar, wetlands, nocturnal Australia) are world class. Away from our furred and feathered
friends, have a look at the Secessionist animal houses built in the early part of the 20th cen-
tury, such as the Elephant House with Zsolnay ceramics, and the Palm House with an
aquarium erected by the Eiffel Company of Paris.
The zoo's newest attraction, the Varázshegy (Magic Mountain), is an interactive exhibi-
tion inside the Great Rock, covering earth's evolution and diversity through 3D film, live an-
imal demonstrations, games and all manner of simple and fun educational tools.

A great place for kids to get up close and personal with a whole range of animals, 'Once
Upon a Time' Park, an extension of the Budapest Zoo, offers a veritable menagerie that can
be petted, fed and ridden on. Added amusement is provided by a set of rather tame (but very
child-friendly) rides including a carousel, a roller coaster and a fairy-tale boat.
Among the four-legged creatures you'll spot here are camels, goats, horses, sheep, deer,
llamas and wild boars, while the winged variety includes emus, ostriches and flamingos.
There are sandpits, wooden play houses and climbing frames too.

Castle ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ) . Built for the 1896 millenary celebrations on the little island
in the park's lake, the castle was modelled after a fortress in Transylvania - but with Gothic,
Romanesque and baroque wings and additions to reflect architectural styles from all over
Hungary. Spread over 5200 sq metres of floor space, it has Europe's largest collection of
things agricultural (fruit production, cereals, wool, poultry, pig slaughtering, viticulture etc).
