A little Russian living room with lace tablecloths, wooden dressers, mismatched tea sets, hat
stands and vintage lamps provides a relaxing daytime coffee stop that morphs into a jump-
ing bar at night offering cocktails, champagne and vodka. If you can, bag the little alcove
upstairs.
CAFE
MŰVÉSZ KÁVÉHÁZ
(Artist Coffeehouse; MAP GOOGLE MAP ; www.muveszkavehaz.hu ; VI Andrássy út 29; cakes

Almost opposite the Hungarian State Opera House, the Artist Coffeehouse is an interesting
place to people watch (especially from the shady terrace), though some say its cakes (690Ft
to 890Ft) are not what they used to be (though presumably they're not thinking as far back
as 1898, when the cafe opened).
CAFE
ECOCAFE
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; ecocafe.hu ; VI Andrássy út 68;
7am-8pm Mon-Fri, from 8am Sat & Sun;
;
M1 Vörösmaty utca)
A welcome stop along Andrássy út, this simple cafe serves great coffee alongside smooth-
ies, juices, teas, sandwiches and cakes, which are almost all organic. There's also a great
salad bar (1090Ft), and tables on the pavement outside.
Local Life
A Night Out in Erzsébetváros
Wander along Király utca or down Gozsdu udvar on a Friday night and it
can feel like the whole world is here. Jostling with wide-eyed tourists and
hen and stag parties may leave you wondering whether the locals have
deserted this area altogether. They haven't - you just need to know where
to find them.
