There's an upstairs bar and restaurant here, but the real draw is the basement club, which
puts on excellent live music and DJs in a cavernous space with a quality sound system, an
unpretentious vibe and a devoted local following.

Budapest's first romkocsma (ruin pub) , Szimpla Kert is firmly on the drinking-tourists' trail
(you can even buy a T-shirt) but remains a landmark place for a drink. It's a huge building
with nooks filled with bric-a-brac, grafitti, art and all manner of unexpected items. Sit in an
old Trabant, watch open-air cinema, down shots or join in an acoustic jam session.

A calm little teahouse on a busy street, with a lovely upper level where you can grab a piece
of chalk and leave your mark while you sup one of the 120 types of tea on offer. Booze and
cakes available too.

This kosher cake shop and cafe in the former ghetto, dating back to 1953, makes and sells
old Jewish favourites (230Ft to 450Ft) such as flódni (a scrumptious three-layer cake with
apple, walnut and poppy-seed fillings) as well as holiday sweets.
For Purim there is kindli (cookies with nuts or poppy seeds) and hamentaschen ('pocket'
biscuits filled with nuts and poppy seeds or apricot jam) and for Rosh Hashanah, lekach
(honey and nut pastry).
