In-Depth Information
Gyöngyösi, an MP for the far-right Jobbik party, called for the government to compile
a national list of Hungarian Jews, especially Jewish government members, whom he
described as a 'national security risk' for alleged solidarity with Israel. The outrage
caused by this remark led the leaders of the right-wing, centre and left-wing parties to
address a demonstration against anti-Semitism in front of the Parliament building,
pledging their support for the Jewish community. Viktor Orbán, the prime minister,
stated that the remark was 'unworthy of Hungary'. The party's stances remain popular
with voters, though: Jobbik polled 20% of the vote in the April 2014 parliamentary
election.
