Canonised in 1943, St Margaret commands something of a cult following in Hungary. A
short distance southeast of the sepulchre there's a much-visited brick shrine with ex-votives
thanking her for various favours and cures.
CHURCH
PREMONSTRATENSIAN CHURCH

This reconstructed Romanesque Premonstratensian Church dedicated to St Michael by the
order of White Canons dates back to the 12th century. Its 15th-century bell mysteriously ap-
peared one night in 1914 under the roots of a walnut tree knocked over in a storm. It was
probably buried by monks during the Turkish invasion.

This attractive garden at the northwestern end of the island has koi, carp and lily pads in its
ponds, as well as bamboo groves, Japanese maples, swamp cypresses, a small wooden
bridge and a waterfall. Just north on a raised gazebo is the Musical Fountain (Zenélőkút), a
replica of one in Transylvania in desperate need of some tender loving care.

Among the most modern (but least atmospheric) of all Budapest bathhouses, this thermal
spa is in the Danubius Thermal Hotel Margitsziget. The baths are open to men and women
in separate sections weekdays and mixed at the weekend. A daily ticket includes entry to the
swimming pools, sauna and steam room, as well as use of the fitness machines.

This huge postwar complex has a total of 10 pools, including two thermal ones and a whirl-
pool. The surrounding park offers plenty of grass and shade.
