Two superb galleries just doors away from one another in the city's theatre district
have put Budapest at the forefront of the showing of photography both as art and as
testimonial. The more established of the pair, the

traordinary venue with top-class photography exhibitions, is in Mai Manó Ház, which
was built in 1894 as a photo studio and is worth a visit in itself. There's a great cafe

, named after the Hungarian-born pho-
tographer and Magnum cofounder Robert Capa (born Endre Friedmann; 1913-54)
and housed in a renovated cultural centre dating back 100 years, seeks to show the
best in contemporary visual arts in changing exhibitions.
