HISTORIC BUILDING
NYUGATI TRAIN STATION
The large iron-and-glass structure on Nyugati tér is the 'Western' train station, built in 1877
by the Paris-based Eiffel Company. In the early 1970s a train crashed through the enormous
glass screen on the main facade when its brakes failed; it came to rest at the tram line. The
old dining hall on the south side now houses one of the world's most elegant McDonald's.
The mammoth West End City Centre shopping mall is just north.
EATING
Lipótváros is a happy hunting ground for fine eating, especially around the
area of the basilica and the Central European University. Terézváros within
the Big Ring Rd is really where you head for after-dark fun and games, espe-
cially around Nagymező utca, but there is no shortage of eateries, including a
few late-night venues.
