M2 Kossuth Lajos tér
Architecture
Designed by Imre Steindl in 1885 and completed just weeks before his death in 1902, this
iconic structure is thought to have been inspired by London's rebuilt Palace of Westminster,
which had opened in 1860. The building is a blend of many architectural styles (neo-Gothic,
neo-Romanesque, neobaroque). Sculptures of the great and the good - kings, princes and
historical figures - gaze out onto the river from the western facade, while the main door, the
Lion Gate , is off recently renovated V Kossuth Lajos tér. Unfortunately, what was spent on
the design wasn't matched in the building materials. The ornate structure was surfaced with
a porous form of limestone that does not resist pollution very well. Due to its extensive sur-
face and detailed stonework, the building is under constant renovation.
