In-Depth Information
Anchor tenant of the Zichy Mansion, where you'll also find the Vasarely Museum, but with
its own entrance on Fő tér, this museum contains a motley assortment of exhibits related to
Óbuda's past through three distinct periods: medieval, industrial and present-day. Highlights
include a 19th-century farmhouse kitchen from Békásmegyer, the output of master cooper
Simon Tóbiás, and a vintage 1970s apartment interior.

One of our favourite small museums in Budapest, this unusual one looks at the catering and
hospitality trade, with restaurant items, tableware, advertising posters, packaging and origin-
al shop signs. Go upstairs for an intimate look at the lives of various tradespeople - from
bakers and publicans to launderers. The lovely cafe is lit by antique lamps. A gem.

FRANKEL LEÓ ÚT
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; Frankel Leó út; 86, 17)
At Bem József tér, Fő utca, the busy main drag in Víziváros, becomes Frankel Leó út, a
quiet, tree-lined street with two spas at its southern end: the very serious Lukács Baths and
the newly opened Veli Bej Baths. A short distance north and tucked away in an apartment
block is the Újlak Synagogue (Újlaki zsinagóga; MAP GOOGLE MAP ; II Frankel Leó út 49 & Árpád
fejedelem útja 70; 17) , built in 1888 on the site of an older prayer house and still in use.
About 2km to the northeast and beside the landmark Aquincum Hotel is the much larger
Óbuda Synagogue (Óbudai zsinagóga; MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 1-268 0183; ht-
tp://obudaizsinagoga.zsido.com ; III Lajos utca 163; 86) , built in 1821. For many years it housed
Hungarian TV (MTV) sound studios, but it's now functioning at least part-time as a súl
(Jewish prayer house). Phone ahead to visit the interior.

This reconstructed tomb contains the mortal remains of Gül Baba, an Ottoman dervish who
took part in the capture of Buda in 1541 and is known in Hungary as the 'Father of Roses'.
The tomb and mosque are a pilgrimage place for Muslims, especially from Turkey, and you
