CITADELLA & LIBERTY MONUMENT
TheCiitadella
dellaatop Gellért Hill is a fortress that never saw a battle. Built by the Habs-
burgs after the 1848-49 War of Independence to defend the city from further insur-
rection, by the time it was ready two years later the political climate had changed and
the Citadella had become obsolete.
Today the fortress contains some big guns and dusty displays in the central court-
yard, the hokey1944 Bunker Waxworksinside a bunker used during WWII, and a
hotel-hostel.
Just east of the Citadella is the Liberty Monument (Szabadság szobor; MAP
GOOGLE MAP ) , the lovely lady with a palm frond in her outstretched arms, proclaiming
freedom throughout the city from atop Gellért Hill. Standing 14m high, she was erec-
ted in 1947 in tribute to the Soviet soldiers who died liberating Budapest in 1945. But
the names of the fallen, once spelled out in Cyrillic letters on the plinth, and the
statues of the soldiers themselves were removed in 1992.
To reach the Citadella take the stairs leading up behind the St Gellért Monument or,
from the Cave Church, follow XI Verejték utca (Perspiration St) through the park start-
ing at the Cave Church. Bus 27 runs almost to the top of Gellért Hill from XI Móricz
Zsigmond körtér, which is served by the new metro line M4.
