A glamorous bistro between Széll Kálmán tér and Déli train station, Mezzo has upmarket
international and Hungarian dishes - and jazz from 7.30pm Monday to Saturday. The decor,
varying shades of brown with the slightest of Asian touches, is restful.

Not just a steakhouse but very meaty indeed in a nation of über-carnivores, Carne di Hall
also dabbles in venison and goose liver. It's in a cellar with outside seating facing the

Just south of Széll Kálmán tér, this is one of those all-you-can-eat Asian(ish) places where
you choose the raw ingredients and legions of cooks stir-fry it for you. The difference here
is that as much beer, wine and sangria as you can sink is included in the price. During sum-
mer there's also seating in an attractive, tree-filled courtyard.

Judged by Hungary's most respected food guide to be the best restaurant in town, this intim-
ate place with the unimaginative name and spartan decor turns its creativity to its superb
food. Try the suckling
mangalica
(a kind of pork) with Savoy cabbage (4500Ft) or the free-
range pullet with polenta (3800Ft). A three-course set lunch is a budget-pleasing 2500Ft.
Four-/eight-course tasting menus are 8000/12,000Ft.

The 'Duck' is the place to go, well, 'quackers', though you need not restrict yourself to the
eight dishes with a bill (4400Ft to 5500Ft); it does a couple of things prepared from Hun-
garian grey-horned cattle, for example. It's an elegant place dating back over a century, with
art on the walls and piano and violin music in the evening.
