CASTLE HILL CAVES
Below Castle Hill is a 28km-long network of caves formed by thermal springs. The
caves were used for military purposes during the Turkish occupation, as air-raid shel-
ters during WWII, and as a secret military installation during the Cold War. Two sec-
tions can be visited.
The Buda Castle Labyrinth (Budavári Labirintus; MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 1-212 0207;
www.labirintusbudapest.hu ; I Úri utca 9 & Lovas út 4/a; adult/under 12yr/senior & student 2000/600/
1500Ft; 10am-7pm; 16, 16A, 116) is a 1200m-long system 16m under the Castle District
that explores how the caves have been used since prehistoric times in five separate
labyrinths encompassing 10 halls and galleries. It's good fun and a relief from the heat
on a hot summer's day (it's always 20°C down here), but it can get scary if you lose
your way or after 6pm when you tour in the dark with lanterns. There's a second en-
trance at Lovas út 4/a.
Far more instructive is the excellent Hospital in the Rock (Sziklakórház; MAP

1800Ft; 10am-8pm; 16, 16A,116) , used extensively during WWII and again during the
1956 Uprising. It contains original medical equipment, graffiti and 200 wax figures.
The guided hour-long tour includes a walk through a Cold War nuclear bunker. There's
also an eight-minute introductory video.
