Tours & Permits
The million-dollar question everyone wants to know: how do I get into
Tibet? It's never been the easiest place to visit, but these days the permit
situation can be a far greater obstacle than snowbound passes or the lack
of oxygen in the air.
Getting into Tibet
Advance Planning
Start your tour planning two months in advance. Agencies need at least two weeks to
arrange permits.
Tibet Tourism Bureau (TTB) Permit
You need a TTB permit to board a train or plane to Lhasa. You will need to pre-arrange
an itinerary through a travel agent before arriving in Tibet.
Travel Permits
You need travel permits to travel outside Lhasa prefecture and you can currently only
get these by hiring transportation and a guide.
Coming from Nepal
If you plan to enter Tibet from Nepal, you will have to travel on a short-term group visa
available in Kathmandu, which is hard to extend.
Budget Tips
In Lhasa you can often hire a guide without transport and just take taxis around town.
For the rest of your trip, find fellow travellers to share costs at Lonely Planet's Thorn
Tree or at hostels in Chéngdū or Xīníng.
