In-Depth Information
March
Political tensions mean that permits are generally not issued and historic
celebrations such as the Yak Butter and Great Prayer festivals are no longer
celebrated. Stay at home.
Tense Times
The anniversary of the 1959 Tibetan uprising on 10 March is just one of several politically
sensitive dates in March.
April
Spring brings pleasant temperatures, few crowds and discounted hotel and
4WD rates, making this a good month to visit. High-elevation destinations
like Nam-tso will be frozen.
May
The warmer weather of late April and early May ushers in the start of the
trekking season. Views are clear across the Himalayas, especially over
Everest. Both April and May are good months to visit eastern Tibet.
May Day
The major three-day national holiday starting 1 May is a very popular time for Chinese
travellers to come to Tibet, so expect flights and hotels to be booked solid and rates to be
higher than usual, especially in Lhasa.
